A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Legato is a first-person action RPG in the style of King's Field and the late-90s console dungeon crawlers. It runs at 640x360 with PS1-style rendering and is played with a gamepad, which is required for now.

You start in a cave on the edge of the kingdom of Veyr, where you sheltered from a storm. The roads past it lead through the Ironroot Hills to the village of Dren. People there are losing their memories, some worse than others, and nobody has seen the King in seven years. Ask around and you'll hear a few different versions of what happened to him.

There's no quest marker or compass. The journal writes down what people told you and what you found, and that's what you go on.

Combat is slow. Enemies wind up before they hit, you block with a shield from the front, and a charged swing will knock a guard open. Stamina runs out quickly if you swing wildly.

Alpha 1

This build covers the first three chapters of the main story and one side quest:

  • Wayfarer Cave, where you start
  • the Ironroot Hills
  • Dren and the valley around it
  • the Old Watchtower, which ends with the first boss

It stops at the road past the tower. If you look around properly it's about one to two hours. Saving is done at save stones.
